MLI PROJECT  # 0196  : Building resilience in northern Mali through safe schools and disaster prevention in communities

PROGRAM IDENTIFICATION  :

1. Location  :

The intervention area covers two circles in the Timbuktu region, namely Gourma Rharous and Niafounké, through five-four villages for fifteen municipalities. Rharous, Nana1, Nana2 and Tintadeini (Municipality of Rharous), Madjakoye and Boranda (Municipality of Séréré), Tagaminty (Municipality of Banikane), Gossi I and Gossi II (Municipality of Gossi), Tin-Arabe (Municipality of Ouinerdene), Bambara Maoudé and Kaye-Kaye (Municipality of Bambara Maoudé), Erewi (Municipality of Haribomo), Niafounké, Andiam ouro, Andiam Sarré, Sibo and Goubo (Municipality of Soboundou), Sambani and Djertou (Municipality of Dianké), Dofana, Kiffo, Doua and Attara (Municipality of Soumpi), Léré, GathiDirma, Sondage and Boundoubadi (Municipality of Léré), Guindigata Nari and Kobé (Municipality of Banikane Narhawa), Barkanielbié and Arkodja (Municipality of Fittouga), Wako and Koma (Municipality and Koumeira) Sarré-Touba (Municipality of N'Gorckou).

The overall objective of the project aims to contribute to improving the resilience of 21,200 girls, boys and their communities in the post-conflict zone of northern Mali through a holistic, multisectoral approach, and a knowledge-based approach. rights.

Through  its specific objectives, the project  economically strengthens 5000  households  to withstand shocks and stresses that compromise the survival and protection of children  and  improves short  and long-term knowledge of 5,000 girls and boys (0-5 years) and women (including pregnant and breastfeeding women) on nutrition, health.

2. Budget: 55 978 351 FCFA

 

3. Results expected by the program  :
  • 210 cooking demonstration sessions on nutrition organized with members of EPC groups;

  • 255 information and awareness sessions  organized on parental education (nutrition, child protection, etc.), for better resilience in terms of  EPC groups and communities;

  • The capacities of the members of  EPC groups and communities are strengthened on parental education (nutrition, child protection, etc.) through  190 information and awareness sessions  and the follow-up of alumni;

  • The annual review of the action plans of the 35 partner schools  ;

  • 18 Action plans  premises in the event of disasters (Preparedness Plan) have been drawn up and     supported in 18 villages (including 15 in Gourma Rharous and 3 in Niafounké) on risk and disaster management with the involvement of the Regional Directorate of Civil Protection  ;

  • The capacities of government staff  of the project intervention area (municipality / circle) were reinforced on risk and disaster management with the involvement of the regional civil protection department  ;

  • 18 village committees have their early warning systems updated (including 15 in Gourma Rharous and 3 in Niafounké)  ;

  • 158 capacity building sessions  organized on disaster and risk reduction, response and recovery.

 

4. Results achieved by the  program  :

  • 210 cooking demonstration sessions on nutrition were carried out through the  intervention sites 15,862 people had participated including 1456 Breastfeeding Women (735 between 18 and 24 and 721 between 25 and 45 years), 1517 Pregnant Women (695 between 18 and 24 and 822 between 25 and 45 years), 2598 other women (1097 between 18 and 24 and 1501 between 25 and 45), 317 men and 9,939  children from 0 to 5 years old.

 

  • 255 mass health awareness sessions  and nutrition took place in all 35 intervention villages. They brought together 13,807 participants including  : 1338 Lactating Women (675 between 18 and 24 and 669 between 25 and 45), 1358 Pregnant Women (603 between 18 and 24 and 755 between 25 and 45), 3987 other women (2117 between 18 and 24 and 1870 between 25 and 45 years old), 512 men and 6612  children from 0 to 5 years old).

 

  • 190 training, information and awareness sessions on parenting education (nutrition, child protection, etc.) for better resilience  were carried out in 13 intervention villages. Thus 14,556 people took part in these sessions including 2,860 Breastfeeding Women (1,578 between 18 and 24 and 1,282 between 25 and 45 years old), 2,041 Pregnant Women  (935 between 18 and 24 and 1106 between 25 and 45) and 9655  children from 0 to 5 years old).  

 

  • Annual review of action plans in 35 schools and 35 villages  : It results from the various reviews that these schools, thanks to the partners, are ready to take their destiny in hand for a good revival of the education system weakened by the crisis of 2012. In accordance with the regulations 490 members of 35 CGS concerned had taken part including 368 men, 87 women, 22 boys and 13 girls.

 

  • Development of contingency plans  : With the involvement of the Regional Directorate of Civil Protection 18 village action plans around the 15 schools of the CAP of Gourma Rharous and 3 of the CAP of Niafounké. The outcome of these sessions made it possible to identify at the level of each village two  types of common disasters and prevention strategies its elements are recorded in a document called the village contingency plan. After preparation, each plan received financial support for its implementation with 360 participants including 84 women and 276 men.

 

  • Training  government officials  of the project intervention zone on risk and disaster management  : A series of  Two-day training took place at the district capitals of Gourma Rharous and Niafounké. It brought together government agents from our 15 intervention municipalities who, thanks to the expertise of the Regional Directorate of Civil Protection, developed strategies for preventing and managing disaster risks. 40 participants took part including 12 women and 28 men.

 

  • The expertise of the DRPC has facilitated the updating of the early warning system of 18 village management committees. At the level of each village, a committee made up of 20 people has been set up for a total of 360 members including 84 women and 276 men.

 

  • 158 capacity building sessions on disaster risk reduction were held in 18 schools, bringing together a large number of participants 26,139  including 8,778 women, 4,883 men, 6,700 boys and 5,778 girls.
