Emergency response, risk mitigation and prevention of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) program in humanitarian areas in northern and central Mali

​CONTEXT AND JUSTIFICATION OF THE PROJECT  :

1. Project objective 

Strengthen services to survivors of gender-based violence (GBV), prevention and mitigation of risks of sexual violence in areas where these services have become difficult to access.

2. Beneficiaries

The beneficiaries of this project are  survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) from refugee, internally displaced, returnee and returnee households and residents of the circles of Douentza and Ménaka. The program targets the whole circle, but given UNHCR's mandate, 60% of beneficiaries must be displaced populations.

3. Expected results

  • Emergency multisectoral responses are provided for survivors of gender-based violence by mobile teams  ;

  • Communities are mobilized and their capacities are strengthened for prevention and promotion of peer support networks for survivors  ;

  • Community innovation is encouraged through the establishment of a fund  ;

  • State and local actors  including judicial officers in charge of the GBV response in target circles are trained on international standards for the management of GBV cases and on the local referral system  ;

  • Teachers in schools with large displaced populations are trained on prevention of GBV in schools, psychological first aid and referral  ;

  • Communities are sensitized on sexual and gender-based violence through local radios  ;

  • Advocacy actions with local authorities are supported so that the needs of survivors are taken into account in the plans.

 

4 Project sites

The project intervention sites are the circles of Douentza and Ménaka.

The UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency in partnership with AMSS supports the efforts of the government of Mali to combat gender-based violence in the northern and central regions.

Domestic violence is one of the main causes of GBV in Mali. In order to contribute to the fight against this scourge, AMSS in partnership with UNHCR is implementing an emergency response program, risk mitigation and prevention of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the humanitarian zones of northern and central Mali. .
